STILL ALIVE AND WELL

-

I AM delighted that a friend has sent me the newspaper article and photograph of my BRGS class 2F of 1956, in your September 16 issue (‘Spotlight on school’s sports).

I know that my name, as form teacher of this class, is with the photo of long ago and am pleased to inform you that I am still alive and have been living in Australia for over 40 years!

You now have my email address and if anyone has remembered me, I would be very happy to make contact.

My congratulations on the lovely idea of Memory Lane photos being a regular feature of the Rossendale Free Press. Dorothy Farrow via email

BORROWING IS SO COSTLY

HOW do the maths add up?

Why is the cost of capital, in other words borrowing money, so expensive in the UK?

The Bank of England rate has now been reduced to 0.25 per cent (Quarter of a percent) yet a typical Buy to Let Mortgage rate is 4.5 to 5 per cent, Bank loans 4 to 8 per cent, credit cards average 16 per cent, and one payday loan organisation is quoting 1299 per cent on their website.

The whole idea of the Bank of England reducing interest rates is so that lower costs of capital can stimulate the economy but the banks it would appear are a law unto themselves.

The big fear of course has always been that lending money too cheaply can lead to the economy overheating but there are no signs of that happening in the North of England or in the Rossendale Valley. Bob Barker Stacksteads via email

WE’VE MUCH TO BE PROUD OF

WE have a very good supply of diverse range of businesses here in Rossendale.

Two companies here in Rossendale have recently been recognised with the highly and rarely recognised award of the Queen’s Award for Enterprise and International Trade.

We have the right to be proud of the many sectors of commercialism of the sections referred to in this New Awards Event - the Northern Lights Awards, the official awards for the UK Northern Powerhouse International Conference and Exhibition - which will again recognise both the employed individuals and the businesses here in Rossendale, of the way they display their qualities and performances and the way they operate on a day to day basis hopefully sustaining their businesses for their long term, here in the Valley.

It would be nice to see again some Rossendale businesses being recognised yet again with their well deserved awards, from this unique new awards event.

For more information visit www.uknorthernpowerhouse.com/ awards-2017

The awards are completely free to enter.

Entries must be received by November 15, 2016. Councillor Granville Morris Mayor of Rossendale
