Brent’s blast for official mistakes

- SHELDAN KEAY

BACUP Borough manager Brent Peters felt that poor decisions by the officials was what cost his side during their 2-0 home defeat to Sandbach United.

The visitors were handed a controversial penalty and were also involved in a couple of fiery moments, and Peters saw that as the difference.

“People get sick of hearing managers and coaches blaming officials as it is like sour grapes, but several big decisions were needed in this game, and for me the official fell short on such decisions,” he said.

“A yellow card for clearly striking an opponent is wrong, if is not a red, it certainly is not a yellow. A yellow card for a player deliberately throwing a drinks bottle which strikes my coach Feree Edwards, Is that not deemed as violent conduct?

“He then awarded a penalty when obviously he was not certain. He looked at his assistant who was even when the referee was the nearest, yet somehow between them the penalty is awarded.

“This is not having a go at the official, this is showing how wrong big decisions being made do have serious consequences in any game, especially when a game is tight has this game was.

“That wrong decision blew any chance of us getting back into this game, and to concede from the penalty spot is really a bitter pill to swallow.”

While Peters was unhappy with some of the decisions made, he also felt that the absence of some of his experienced players played a part.

“We did not play as well as I know we can play, an important contributing factor to this is we are missing our leaders on the pitch who help and guide our young players through the game,” he said.

“We are now without the services and leadership of Kelvin Trippier, who is now recovering from surgery, plus club captain Shane Birtles who is out for the same reason.

“There is also the loss of experienced defender Adrian Bellamy due to suspension and these are all important players who contribute a lot, not only in performances but in their leadership.”
