Little consolation as Bacup slip again

-

NW COUNTIES PREMIER DIVISION LITHERLAND REMYCA.. 4 BACUP BOROUGH ........... 2 SHELDAN KEAY BACUP Borough suffered defeat on Saturday after they were beaten by in-form play-off contenders Litherland REMYCA.

A goal inside the first minute of the game from Litherland youth starlet Lennon Whewell on his debut helped set the hosts on their way and condemn Brent Peters’ men to a loss.

The loss has left Bacup in 15th place in the North West Counties Division One table.

It is the second time that Bacup have suffered a defeat to Litherland this season, having already been beaten 3-0 at home back in September.

Litherland managed to defend a lead against a strong counter-attacking Bacup side, showing great determination and teamwork to come out on top.

The tone was set from the kick off when the ball was worked wide to Alex Ryan, replacing the injured Michael Boyle, who provide the assist for Whewell to score on his first start for the senior side.

Litherland continued to dictate play and they found themselves three goals to the good by half time, even with a missed penalty after Colin McDonald was fouled.

Joe Peacock continued to impress when he kept play alive following a corner to set up a header for David Flynn, while McDonald continued his good scoring record smashing in the third - again from a cross.

Bacup had opportunities of their own, but they were unable to find a goal and Peters knew he had to shake things up at the break if they were to have any chance of pulling off an impressive comeback.

Peters’ changes at half-time made an instant impact, as the visitors soon netted at the back post to reduce the deficit to 3-1.

They couldn’t capitalise on the goal though, as Remyca continued to create chances with Flynn and Niall Gannon both heading wide before Ryan, who had a goal disallowed earlier on in the game, grabbed the fourth following good play by Jay McGrane.

Despite trailing 4-1, Bacup continued to fight as they tried to get on the scoreboard once again, and they did get a late consolation goal after another excellent tactical switch caught Litherland off guard.

Sensational goalkeeping from Bacup stopper Aaron Ashley then kept Litherland at four goals, but the damage was already inflicted.

It means that Bacup’s tough run of form in the North West Counties Division One league continues, having now failed to win since the start of October.

They’ll now hope that they can return to winning ways when they host Whitchurch Alport at the Brian Boys West View Stadium this weekend.

It will be an extremely difficult ask for Bacup, as Whitchurch are currently top of the table having won 14 of their 19 matches so far this season.

The match against Whitchurch kicks off a busy run of fixtures for Bacup over the next few weeks, with the team then making the trip to AFC Blackpool on Tuesday.
