Home acts after damning report

NURSING home bosses said they have taken ‘prompt and comprehensive’ action to address issues after a damning watchdog inspection report.

Crawshaw Hall Medical Centre and Nursing Home in Crawshawbooth was rated ‘inadequate’ in three out of five key areas by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and voluntary entered into ‘special measures’.

The facility, which provides care for up to 50 older people and those suffering from dementia and psychological disorders, has now been given six months to improve.

The two-day unannounced inspection by the CQC found a series of breaches relating to medications, premises and equipment, staffing, dignity and respect, governance, records, employment of ‘fit and proper persons’, infection control, ‘person centred care’ and recruitment.

Marc Karoo, director of Crawshaw Hall Health- care Ltd, said all the issues in the report have now quickly resolved.

He said: “Following the inspection, Crawshaw Hall promptly and comprehensively addressed all areas that were raised in the report, many of these were addressed on the same day.

“The home has liaised closely and regularly with the CQC and we look forward to our next inspection as the changes we have made coherently address all issues.

“In addition to this the home has started implementing the latest cloud based care planning software so that the levels of care can be continually audited.”

In it’s report the CQC said medicines were not managed safely and some staff did not check medicines had been taken when administered to people. Inspectors also found risk assessments had not been updated for thee months and people also had access to ‘limited activities in the home’.

However the CQC said residents and family members they spoke to ‘felt safe’ in the home, were ‘happy with the care they received’.

The watchdog said: “The overall rating for this service is ‘inadequate’ and the service is therefore in ‘special measures’.

“If not enough improvement is made within this timeframe so that there is still a rating of inadequate for any key question or overall, we will take action in line with our enforcement procedures to begin the process of preventing the provider from operating this service.”

The CQC said this could lead to their registration being cancelled or terms varied.
