Students raise voices for success

-

A BAND of 15-year-old high school students has secured a place in the final of two competitions.

Thursday’s Child has reached the final of Sing Bolton Sing and the Rochdale Festival of Performing Arts next month, with gigs lined up.

The four-piece is made up of Year 10 pupils Lewis Fielding, India Flavell, Kayleigh Mableson and Joe Charles. Joe plays the cajon, a box shaped percussion instrument, in the group, while Lewis plays guitar, Kayleigh is lead vocals and India provides the harmonies and also plays percussion.

Kevin Gibbs, head of expressive arts at the school, suggested they become a quartet after hearing India and Kayleigh singing harmonies at Christmas.

India said: “My older sister Lydia came up with the name because Thursday’s Child has far to go.”

Joe said: “Mr Gibbs came up with the idea of putting us together and it seems to have worked.”

A video of the band performing an acoustic cover of Amy Winehouse’s ‘Valerie’ has over 1,000 views on YouTube.

Thursday’s Child played at The Woolpack in Haslingden on April 7, with performances at Edenfield Fete in June and the Blackburn and Bolton Teenage Markets lined up.
