ROSSENDALE Scribbler: Yes, money is tight but the council should pull its finger out and reopen Haslingden Baths (Free Press, April 28 and website)

Andy Mcm: Schools are having to let teachers go through budget cuts. The emergency services are going through the same problem. I really don’t think a pool is that important. Janet O’Driscoll: In an area of deprivation, public health and exercise are really important. The pool is accessible to many residents of Haslingden who would have to rely on public transport to get other pools. The residents of Haslingden would have loved the new pool they were promised but got Rawtenstall Town Square instead. Peter Steen: The money for a brand new pool was made available by the then Conservative run council, unfortunately the Labour group when they took control diverted the cash for Rawtenstall centre meaning the loan still has to be repaid without an income to cover it. Andy Mcm: I agree with you but for the amount of people that will use it it’s a waste of public money. Education and police on the streets have to come first. At the end of the day we are going to have to go through massive cuts over the next few years. We just don’t have the money for it and that’s why it closed in the first place. Christine Hodgson: I used to swim here when I was very young and went to school across the road, now I’m 62 and live in Australia, would be very sad if this icon wasn’t looked after. Abdul Sattar Khan: I think it should be knocked down and used for the sole purpose of a morning and afternoon car park for the school opposite. It’s a nightmare there in the mornings – for parents and residents alike. A restrictive covenant preventing building homes on the land for the duration that the school exists should also be included. Just an idea. Karl Mather: Would people use it enough? This is a genuine question without any slant.

I would like to go swimming either on the way in or on the way home from work. Marl Pits is booked for fast length swimmers pre 09:00hrs & schools from 09:15. If we were able to buy books of discounted tickets that would prove commitment. Nigel Scholes Harper: Hopeless the area needs another swimming facility.

This should never have been neglected like Bacup baths should never have been allowed to close. Nigel Lewer: Just get it open. Pam Menzies: I actually drowned in these baths. Life guards did a brilliant job and bought me back. Samara Barnes: Awful place. Best off shut! Jed Loveday: Don’t open it will cost to much TRIBUTES to Bacup church deacon and band member Malcolm Hargreaves. Malcolm died at Pendleside Hospice on April 17, aged 62 (Free Press, April 28 and website) Michael Lord: Sorry to hear this, what a well respected Gentleman. He also displayed the best Christmas lights on Hoghton Avenue.

It was a pleasure to have you as a next door neighbour. Julie Carter: He’s going to be so missed, fantastic youth leader along with everything else he turned his hand to, god bless Malcolm x Rory Chamberlain: Sorry for your loss Peter.

FURY as River Irwell suffers serious pollution for second time in three weeks (Free Press, April 28 and website) Stephanie Jones: What are the Environment Agency doing about this? The perpetrators need to be caught and face consequences. Disgusting. Steve Chappell: Jail the MDs of the company involved, won’t happen again. Graham Fox: Absolutely need to catch the polluters and make them pay big style. Sandra Smith: Surely they must know who’s responsible!
