MRS Muriel Simpson, of Booth Road, Stackstead­s, died peacefully at the home of her daughter Lucille on Monday, May 1 shortly after her 80th birthday.

She was born on April 16, 1937 in Failsworth, where she lived most of her life before moving to Brandwood in Newchurch 18 months ago to be nearer to her family.

Following her retirement, Muriel enjoyed dog walking and caravannin­g with her husband Alf who sadly died in 1999, after which she devoted most of her time to pottering in her garden and reading.

For many years she worked at Ferranti in Moston and latterly as a dinner lady in various schools in Failsworth.

Muriel was the much loved mother of Denise, Alan, Lucille and Jayne and the loving grandmothe­r of Nicola, Sarah and Anna. Sadly she will miss the birth of her fourth grandchild Joshua, expected in July.

Muriel was a great character who will be missed greatly by all her family and friends, both old and new.

A service will be held at the Chapel of Rest on Thursday, May 11 at 9.20am followed by cremation at Burnley at 10am conducted by Mr Peter Cox. Family flowers MR Derek Wright, of Clough Road, Bacup died in Royal Blackburn Hospital on Thursday, April 27, aged 78.

A service will be held at St Mary’s and St Anselm’s RC Bacup on Thursday, May 11 at 1.30pm followed by interment in Bacup cemetery, conducted by Father Frank Thorpe.

Born in Birmingham, he moved to Bacup when he was four years old. He was employed at Holroyds Castings in Rochdale for 34 years until its closure, then worked at National Carpets in Bacup until he retired.

He enjoyed fishing and darts and also served in the Royal Engineers during his National Service.

He leaves his wife Rita, sons Derek, Trevor and Nigel, daughter-in-law Siobhan, grandchild­ren Victoria, Daniel, Nigel, Scott and Georgia, seven great-grandchild­ren, sister Jennifer, brother-inlaw Michael, sister-in-law Beryl, nephews, nieces and many friends.
