TRIBUTES have been paid to a 92-year-old who died six days after the car he was travelling in crashed, flipping onto its side.

Thomas Fort, who was a member of Bacup Golf Club, passed away on April 26 from a chest injury sustained in the crash, which happened near the George and Dragon pub on Rochdale Road in the town.

The 87-year-old driver was not injured.

Mr Fort’s family have paid tribute to him, saying he leaves behind ‘a lot of fond memories’. A family statement said: “He was dearly loved by his family and will be sadly missed by both them and all his friends.”

Bacup Golf Club secretary Sue Styles said he was a staple of the golf club and was known for his ‘fund of anecdotes’.

She added: “Tom was a member for 50 years, having joined in 1967. When he gave up playing golf and became a social member, Tom was at the club every week for a drink and a chat with his friends of all ages.”

TRIBUTES have been paid to a 92-year-old who tragically died following a road collision.

Thomas Fort, from Bacup, was a member of Bacup Golf Club and a keen gardener. He passed away on April 26 from a chest injury sustained in the collision six days earlier.

Lancashire Police have released an appeal for information about the incident, which took place outside the George and Dragon Pub on Rochdale Road in the town at around 10.35pm.

Mr Fort’s family have paid tribute to him, saying he leaves behind ‘a lot of fond memories’.

A family statement said: “He was dearly loved by his family and will be sadly missed by both them and all his friends.

“He leaves behind a lot of fond memories and a life lived to the full.

Mr Fort was a member of Bacup Golf Club and a keen gardener who took great pride in keeping his garden in tip top condition.”

Club secretary Sue Styles said he was a staple of the golf club and was known for his ‘ fund of anecdotes’.

She added: “Tom was a member for 50 years, having joined in 1967. When he gave up playing golf and became a social member, Tom was at the club every week for a drink and a chat with his friends of all ages.

“He attended social events regularly from the time when he used to come with his late wife, Anne, who was also an active social member of the club.

“He enjoyed talking to people about times past in Bacup and was a fund of anecdotes, which he related with his customary dry sense of humour.”

Police said Mr Fort was a passenger in a Honda CR-V, being driven by a 87-year-old man, which collided with two parked cars, a Ford Fiesta and Nissan Note, before flipping over and leaving the occupants trapped inside.

The driver was uninjured in the collision.

Road policing officer Sergeant Lee Campbell passed on their thoughts to Mr Fort’s family and said they are appealing for any information about the incident.

He added: “We are appealing for information following this tragic incident and our thoughts are with Mr Fort’s family and friends at this very sad time. We are keen to speak to anyone who saw the Honda in the area before the incident, or witnessed the collision.

“If you can assist us with our enquiries, please call 101 quoting log reference 1543 of April 20.”
