TOY Storythemed bunting is being created by youngsters at Northern Primary School to decorate a carnival float at Fearns Community Sports College.

The year fives from the primary school in Bacup went to Fearns in Stacksteads to work with the art department on the school’s float.

Northern Primary School pupil Gemmima Higgins, aged 10, said: “We first used string to create a design on a triangle of white material that was tie-dyed. Mine was pink.

“Then we added a letter and I did ‘O’ and added the bouncy ball character from Toy Story.”

The finished bunting will be used to decorate a lorry provided by kitchen, bedroom and bathroom manufacturer, J and J Ormerod, which will feature in the procession at Bacup and Stacksteads Carnival on Sunday, June 25.

Head of creative art and technology at Fearns, Jennene Whiteley, said: “The year fives were a delight to welcome into school again.

“We really appreciate their help with our carnival theme for this year’s event.

“The pupils are becoming more and more confident in our secondary school environment.

“Activities such as this really help to smooth the transition from primary school and here at Fearns we offer ample opportunities across our curriculum.

“We truly look forward to welcoming them again soon.” ST ANNE’S Edgeside CE Primary School had a special visitor.

MP Jake Berry was a guest in year six at the school as part of their topic work.

He spent an hour with the children, who had prepared challenging questions for the politician, ranging from how he handled travelling to and from London, to the difference between a democracy and a dictatorship.

One pupil, Precious Love, asked him if he could take a question to Parliament to enforce a complete ban on smoking across the country.

Headteacher Charlotte Hartley said: “Mrs Webb and Mrs Lynch, who organised the event, were overwhelmed with how well Mr Berry engaged with the children on their level, and how clearly he explained matters to them. Afterwards the children said the session was brilliant.

“The children of St Anne’s have already started fundraising for a visit to Parliament in the future.”
