MORE than 6,000 crimes left unsolved across Valley in three years. Police unions say austerity cuts to officer numbers are starting to bite (Free Press, May 5 and website) Zulf Ali: More austerity to come. Just watch Tories destroy police education and NHS. The only thing that will grow will be food banks. They will still blame EU and immigrants for everything. Chris Daniel: Conservative Councillor Peter Steen said he was “very, very surprised” ( by the rise in crime). Your party have stripped the police service to the bone and you’re “surprised”? Either you have no idea what your party is doing or have no idea of cause and effect. I suppose people must want high crime because they’re voting for more cuts so they can’t complain. Gary Cunliffe: Funny how they don’t mention the mickey mouse sentencing that’s been going on for a long time now and the charge to not jail people even when they have a record as long as your arm, gotta give people a second chance, even when they have already been caught multiple times for the same offence. As for the police cuts, they have been happening for years. Whitworth used to have a police station in the early 1990s for example, so its nothing new. As for unsolved crimes, I’ve had three bikes stolen over the years, one of them I handed the police a lead and a witness who saw the person with the bike as they tried to stash it in someone’s house. What did they do? A quick question and that was it. I never heard anything back apart from a form letter with the crime number on, again in the 1990s. Deb Brown: So don’t vote for Tory austerity, simple as that!! Colin Treeman: Elsewhere Tory austerity causes the super rich to get richer. Who’d have guessed?
