Lancs lose to relentless Roses rivals

-

CRICKET CHRIS OSTICK LANCASHIRE suffered a resounding three-day defeat against Yorkshire at Headingley.

The Red Rose slipped from 141 for four overnight in their second innings to 209 all out, setting a victory target of just 60 half-an-hour before lunch.

Yorkshire knocked off the runs with all 10 wickets to spare inside 21 overs during the early stages of the afternoon.

“They were pretty relentless on the first day and we weren’t able to match that. I think it comes to down to old fashioned English conditions where it was really bowler friendly,” said coach Glen Chapple.

“We didn’t live up to their bowling, especially Ryan Sidebottom and Ben Coad early on. They just hammered out a length and gave our batsmen nowhere to go.

“I don’t think the pitch changed on the first day. We both had the opportunity to bowl on a bowlerfriendly pitch. There was some cloud around and having some rain after you’ve tossed up isn’t ideal. But I don’t think it was the toss at all. It was basically the quality of our bowling didn’t match them. We ●● have to take that on the chin.”

This was Lancashire’s first defeat in five, and they have still not beaten their closest rivals in the Championship since 2011 when they won away and went on to claim the title.

With Shiv Chanderpaul and Dane Vilas at the crease at the start of play, the Red Rose would have hoped to at least put some pressure on Yorkshire in seamerfriendly conditions.

The ex-international pair had already shared 60 for the fifth wicket, but they could only add four more to that stand.

Vilas (22) was the first wicket to fall in the third over of the day, the 51st of the innings, when he edged Ryan Sidebottom to second slip as the score fell to 145 for five.

Chanderpaul then fell for 47 in the 54th when Ben Coad had him caught behind at 149.

There was brief respite for Lancashire with 13 runs coming off one Jack Brooks over as Jordan Clark and Ryan McLaren tried to steady the ship.

But when McLaren was caught at third slip off Bresnan’s third ball of the morning in the 65th over, it was the beginning of the end for the visitors.

They lost their last four wickets for just 12 runs in 27 balls, including Clark for 37.

Tom Bailey edged Sidebottom to fourth slip in the 68th over before Stephen Parry gave Bresnan his third wicket. ●● Zain Abbas proved a thorn in Ramsbottom’s side at the weekend FOSTERS LANCASHIRE LEAGUE CRICKET SHELDAN KEAY

RA M S B O T TOM Cricket Club had a mixed 24 hours in the Lancashire League after winning one of their two matches during the double- header weekend.

Saturday’s game against Church saw Ramsbottom heavily beaten by nine wickets, but they redeemed themselves on Sunday by defeating Rishton by 50 runs.

Ramsbottom batted first in the match against Church at Acre Bottom, but struggled to make any real impact, with only Fraser Kay (34) and Simon Read (22) managing to reach double figures.

The remaining nine batsmen could make just nine runs between them, meaning Ramsbottom were bowled all out for just 72.

It was an easy run chase for Church, as professional Zain Abbas scored 39 while Josh Scully added an unbeaten 21 to help their side reach the total after just 13 overs.

Ramsbottom turn things around away from home against Rishton, with professional Grant Thomson top scoring with 55.

Jonathan Fielding (26) and Tom Parton (25) also chipped in as Ramsbottom finished on 164 at the end of their innings.

It looked like Rishton were on course to reach the target after a good start from Mo Patel (35), Shaun von Berg (32) and Chris Sanderson (22) left them 77-2.

A collapse soon followed though, with Rishton then bowled out for 114 to hand Ramsbottom the win.

HASLINGDEN also won one of their games over the weekend, losing to Clitheroe by eight wickets on Saturday before beating Todmorden by two wickets on Sunday.

Haslingden won the toss and decided to bat first against Clitheroe, but they struggled to have any major impact. Phil Hayes top scored with just 21 as his team were bowled all out for 79.

Clitheroe eased to their target in just 16 overs after opener Charlie Dewhurst led the charge by scoring an unbeaten 46.

Haslingden’s game against Todmorden on Sunday was a different story, with Todmorden finishing on 153 all out after they were put into bat first.

Despite a nervy start which saw Haslingden 2-3 at one stage, good scores from Hayes (43) and Jordan Shannon (31 not out) helped the team run out winners with two wickets and one over to spare.

It was a disappointing weekend for RAWTENSTALL after they came up short in both of their games. They were beaten by five wickets against Colne on Saturday and then heavily lost by 182 against East Lancashire on Sunday.

Colne won the toss and decided to field first during Saturday’s game, and it looked to be a good idea when neither of Rawtenstall’s openers scored a run.

Professional Andrew Payne soon turned things around with an unbeaten 95, while Rizwan Shafiq scored 75 as Rawtenstall finished on 190- 5 at the end of their 50 overs.

The match went right down to the wire, but Colne reached the total with eight balls remaining to come out on top.

It was a more emphatic defeat for Rawtenstall on Sunday, with East Lancashire making an impressive 307 in their innings after a top score of 137 not out from just 69 balls by professional Andries Gous.
