Tributes to woman who died in bus tragedy
POLICE have appealed for witnesses to come forward with information on the fatal collision on Rochdale Road.
Pensioner Margaret Wright sustained serious head injuries in a collision with a 464 Rosso bus service, heading from Rochdale to Accrington, on July 12.
The North West Air Ambulance landed at the cricket ground and airlifted the casualty to Royal Preston Hospital, where she sadly later died.
The road was closed for four hours while an investigation took place into the collision which occurred near to the Irwell Medical Practice.
Officers are now appealing for information to establish the circumstances of the collision.
PS Patrick Worden, of the Road Policing Unit, said: “This is a tragic incident where a woman has sadly lost her life and my thoughts remain with her family and friends at this time.
“An investigation to establish the exact circumstances of the collision is underway and I would appeal to anyone who was in the area and witnessed what happened to contact us. Similarly, if you were a passenger on the bus and have not yet spoken to us then I would urge you to get in touch.”
In a statement, Lancashire Police said: “At around 11.40am on Wednesday, July 12 a 76-year-old woman was crossing a zebra crossing on Rochdale Road when she was involved in a collision with a single decker bus.”
Phil Smith, managing director of Rosso, said: “Sadly this incident has resulted in the death of the lady who was involved. The company wishes to express its sincere condolences to the family and friends of the lady who has lost her life and we are fully co-operating with the ongoing investigation into this incident which is being conducted by Lancashire Police. Rosso is also doing all it can to support the bus driver at this very difficult time.”
