Just a little effort could make road safer

-

IT’S been a few months since the news that ‘average speed’ safety cameras were to be installed on the Grane Road in an attempt to make it safer.

Signs forewarning of what is to come have appeared, and for a while it looked like some work was taking place ahead of installing the cameras.

But I’m surely not the only one to notice that the road could be made instantly safer if the weight limit rules were actually enforced once in a while?

The Grane Road has long been favoured by lorry drivers as a shortcut route between the M65 and M66, despite a weight limit on heavy goods vehicles being imposed several years ago.

Very few of the ones I get stuck behind on a regular basis could legitimately argue they were on the road because they needed access to an address there – and invariably they create long queues behind them as they struggle to get their heavy vehicles over the tops.

While that in itself isn’t an excuse for dangerous overtaking and speeding to get past the vehicles clogging up the Grane Road, there’s no doubt it’s a cause which could be remedied.

Lancashire Police may argue it’s all about prioritising resource, but how about reallocating the bright yellow speed camera van which parks up at the foot of the Grane Road for a few days every now and again?

It’s amazing how quickly word would get round then – and I’m sure the Grane Road would be much safer as a result.
