Planting a future at school club

ANEW community club has been set up at Fearns Community Sports College as an offshoot of the Rotary Club.
‘Interact’ has held a bulb planting session in the Stacksteads school’s grounds, with crocus bulbs donated by Rossendale Rotary Club and daffodils provided by English teacher Ann-Marie Kenny.
Emma East, 14, said: “We planted the bulbs on the banking near to the entrance to Fearns. I like helping the community.”
Leon Yilmaz, also 14, said: “When I was in Year 7, I planted bulbs in The Glen with Stacksteads Countryside Park Group.
“I remember going past The Glen with my family in the spring and pointing out to them the daffodils I had planted.
“The bulbs will help make the place look nicer and brighten up the community.”
Vicky Jackson, associate assistant headteacher, said Interact encourages pupils to volunteer and become an ‘active member of the community,’ with more than 50 youngsters expressing an interest in being involved.
The pupils have been tasked with deciding how to raise money, what organisations to become involved with and how then can improve the school environment. ●● Interact club members Georgia Richens and Leon Yilmaz planting bulbs outside Fearns Community Sports College
