Knockout showing by Heffron

- SHELDAN KEAY

MARK Heffron has sent out a statement to the rest of the super-middleweight division after he became the first man to stop Lewis Taylor inside the distance on Saturday.

Heffron defeated Taylor by seventh round stoppage to extend his unbeaten record to 18-0 at the Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle.

It was the 25th fight of Taylor’s career, and he had previously shared the ring with the likes of recent world title challenger Jamie Cox, along with Tommy Langford, Luke Keeler and Eamonn O’Kane.

None of those men were able to stop him, with Heffron again showing the power he holds, picking up the 14th knockout win of his career.

It was the biggest win of Heffron’s career so far, with the 25-year-old also defeating notable names such as Mateo Veron, Istvan Zeller, Achilles Szabo and Chris O’Brien during his career.

Heffron is trained by boxing legend Ricky Hatton, and it was a good night for Hatton’s stable, as his heavyweight prospect Nathan Gorman was also victorious, beating Mohamed Soltby by fifth round stoppage to win the vacant WBC International Silver heavyweight belt.

Gorman is also unbeaten in his career, with that win taking his record to 11-0, with nine wins inside the distance.

In the main event of Saturday’s card, Liam Smith moved one step closer to becoming world champion again after defeating domestic rival Liam Williams during their much-anticipated rematch.
