Haygarth adds to his series lead

-

●● Derek Schofield CYCLING DEREK SCHOFIELD THE eighth round of the North west cyclo-cross series took place on a new circuit at Haigh Hall, Wigan last Saturday and Rossendale returned home with some rewarding results.

The circuit was held mainly in the wooded area around the main hall and, for the first time this season, incorporated a loop under and over a bridge, where many spectators cheered on those willing to leap off the top of the return.

The numerous climbs and descents in heavy mud and leaves, with greasy tree roots exposed, favoured those with the skills to dismount and run and remount without hesitation and this suited Dave Haygarth of Helmshore who took a clear win in the V40 class to confirm his lead in the series.

This was a great win for Haygarth after a shaky start to the series, and he is now looking to retain the trophy he won last year. Daughter Elsie ●● also had an excellent win in the U10 girls event.

Katie Taylor took a fine win in the U16 girls, just 8 seconds in front of Tilly Percy of Salt Ayre Cog Set, and has now established as a clear front runner for the series.

Rossendale were well represented in the V50 event with Carl Nelson the lead, finishing 19th and Mick Taylor 25th, in his best season of CX.

Derek Schofield continued his run of bad luck with mechanical problems with a branch through his rear wheel, coming in 32nd and 3rd V60.

Further down the field, Rossendale riders were well grouped, with Paul Warrener 55th, and Adrian Watts in his first race since injury in 58th just pipping V65 Graham Wright in 59th.

Matt Toman worked hard in the final race of the day to take an excellent 5th Junior placing and 41st overall in the senior/ junior event.

There is now a break until the fast course at Stadt Moers, St Helens on 17th December.
