NEIGHBOURS have spoken of their ‘shock and disgust’ after a man was attacked with a meat cleaver on a residential street.

Police were called to Cross Street North in Haslingden shortly after 8am on Tuesday, November 21 to reports that a man had been seriously assaulted.

He suffered a fractured skull, and lacerations to his head, arm and finger.

Police said the 28-yearold victim is recovering and two people have been arrested.

Trevor Evans, who has lived on the street since 1976, said he is ‘gobsmacked’.

He told the Free Press: “I heard a door slam and then somebody jumping into a car and it squealing away. I didn’t realise it was such a serious incident.

“Nothing has ever happened like this on the street. There were lots of police around and forensic people were taking photographs.”

Another resident, who asked not to be named, said: “I’m absolutely surprised, appalled and disgusted. It’s a nice quiet area.

“I work from home and didn’t realise what had happened until the police came round and knocked on my door.”

A university student said: “I didn’t know what happened until I came home and saw all the police cars. I’m very surprised by it. We don’t get much trouble round here.”

Another resident said: “It’s very shocking. Most of the people who live on this road are young couples or first-time buyers.

“It’s a quiet area and the only problem we have are people using the road when they come off the motorway and go through the industrial estate.

“For something like this to happen is very shocking. When I was leaving the house [ on Tuesday] there were more and more police arriving and they put tape across the house.”

Police said the attack happened on the street and it is being treated as an ‘isolated incident’.

A 36-year-old man from Rawtenstall has been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage to a vehicle and assault, and a 29-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender and released on bail until December 3.

Police are interested in speaking to the driver of a white vehicle which was seen in the area at the time and anybody else who may have witnessed the incident.
