Pupils enjoy diversity
CHILDREN from a Valley school got a taste of what it is like to live in another culture when they took part in a ‘Celebrating Diversity Day’.
Year 8 pupils from Alder Grange school in Rawtenstall took part in a series of activities to help them learn about other cultures from around the world, and how they have influenced the UK.
During the day around 150 pupils took part in group activities, which included carrying out research into an assigned country, before preparing and making food from that country which they then sampled.
Stalls were set up in the school to replicate a market place, promoting each country. The pupils were then judged by visitors from the wider community including representatives from Rossendale Civic Pride.
Rosie Hesketh, humanities teacher, said: “It was a very successful day in which pupils learn about themselves, others and the world around them using imagination and creativity in their learning.
“The day, which forms part of the Year 8 Humanities curriculum, helped pupils learn more about other cultures and how they have impacted on British culture, physical geography, history what they eat and when and where people moved to in the UK.
“The day contributes to their understanding of the range of different cultures within school and further afield that have shaped their own heritage and those of others.”
Year 8 pupil Ashley Gregory said: “I found it interesting to research and learn about different cultures and how they influenced the UK, it has really helped to widen my knowledge. I also really enjoyed working with pupils that I’d not had the opportunity to work with before. Another highlight was creating the dish for the country I was given to study.”
