keeper who wrestled him to the ground.

And from the resultant penalty Wylie sent the keeper the wrong way to give St Mary’s the lead. St Mary’s powered forward and four minutes later Wylie played in Hanley who cheekily chipped the ball over the keeper to open up a two-goal advantage.

As the weather worsened chances became hard to come by and the final 20 minutes was played in a fierce snow storm. Typically when the referee brought the game to a close the sun came out as the St Mary’s players celebrated.

Manager Anthony Halstead said: “It was a great result today, although it was a cup game and not high on our agenda, it keeps our momentum going, the performance was very positive.

“We are lucky that we have a great depth in our squad of both experienced and young players and that paired with three or four quality lads returning to the club, any team we put out will compete with the best in the Premier League. Today’s team have well over a thousand games in the West Lancs League between them and that is very important in our current league position.

“There is a positive buzz about the club and I’m sure that will also help us out of the precarious position we are currently in, and see us retain our Premier League status the cup game wins will be a pleasant bonus.”

This Saturday St Mary’s have a big relegation match when they entertain Whitehaven who are nine points in front of St Mary’s but have played 11 games more. Kick off at 3pm.
