Thousands enjoy carnival fun in sun

ASWELTERING Bacup and Stacksteads Carnival saw thousands attend Moorlands Park, Bacup, and a packed procession.
Organisers were delighted when the fabu- lous weather brought the crowds out - even though the annual celebration was also competing with the England versus Panama World Cup match.
Catherine Smyth, chairman of Bacup and Stacksteads Carnival Organisation, said: “When we realised the football clash we feared a 1pm exodus, which would have been just after the parade arrived, however we were delighted that the people attending decided instead to stay. I would personally like to thank every person who came along to the carnival, those in the parade, the crowd that watched, per- formed on stage or had a stall. Most importantly I need to thank the carnival makers.”
The procession of walking parades and two floats attracted four schools, Dansworks Dance Academy, Limitless Cheerleaders and a new group the Valley Hoopers and many more. With great entries on the carnival theme of animals, Fearns Community Sports College’s ‘jungle-theme’ float caught the judges’ eye as did the walking parade entry from St Saviour’s Primary School, Bacup.
On the park the stage was kept busy with a variety of acts from danc- ers to cheerleaders.
Parade organiser Jackie Oakes said: “We are so grateful to everyone who took part in the parade.
“All along the parade route we had fantastic crowds and we have already had groups booking to attend next year.”
