BACUP CAMERA CLUB MEMBERS of Bacup Camera Club continued their series of summer evening photographic trips by recently visiting the photogenic town of Hebden Bridge.

We were not the only ones with the same idea that evening as we soon met a similar club from Huddersfield.

The cameras around their necks gave the game away!

Club members took advantage of the lovely soft evening light and captured a range of different images of the townscape.

The evening finished convivially in one of the local pubs, where the current state of the country was put to rights.

New members interested in photography and improving their skills are very welcome.

For more information visit the club’s website www.bacupcameraclub. org.uk. RAWTENSTALL PUBLIC WELFARE COMMITTEE THE Welfare Committee held a tea dance in the Pyramid Room at the ●● Members of Bacup Camera Club in Hebden Bridge Unity Centre, Rawtenstall Unitarian Church.

All present had a vote for the destination of the September Annual Day trip for seniors.

It was decided that Cleveleys was the favourite, with Llandudno a close second.

This trip will take place on Wednesday, September 5. Registration will take place on Saturday, September 1, at a coffee morning at the church, starting 10.30am.

Come along to get your ticket to ride on the trip and if anyone has items for the food hampers to be raffled on the coaches bring them along. Any further details from June on 01706 228183. RAMSBOTTOM RECORDED MUSIC SOCIETY OUR president Pat Scott presented a recital of some of her favourite music.

Appropriately, in view of our recent glorious weather, Pat opened with Mendelssohn’s overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream, composed when Mendelssohn was only 17 years old, after which we heard The Waltz of the Snowflakes from Tchaikovsky’s ballet The Nutcracker.

In contrast, the American singer Eva Cassidy gave us the beautiful Fields of Gold, then Pat chose The Walk to the Paradise Garden from Delius’ opera A Village Romeo and Juliet.

Taking us to the interval were the pianist Murray Perahia and the Israel Symphony Orchestra conducted by Zubin Mehta, with the last two movements of Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor, which the composer himself premiered at his final public appearance in Poland a few weeks before he left for good.

We returned to Max Bruch’s Kol Nidre, composed for Liverpool’s Jewish community while Bruch was principal conductor of the City’s Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.

The cellist was Maria Kliegel.

Richard Strauss was next featured when Pat played his setting of At Sunset, the very moving poem by the German Romantic poet Joseph von Eichendorff.

The soprano Renée Fleming was accompanied by the Houston Symphony Orchestra.

Pat’s concluding choice ended a lovely entertaining programme, which brought to a close another successful season for the society, when we heard the 2nd and 3rd movements of the Sibelius Violin Concerto in D minor in the company of Ida Haendel with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Paavo Berglund.

The next meeting of the society is the AGM to be held on Thursday, August 9.

WEDNESDAY, July 25, saw our biggest turnout for some months, as 27 ramblers enjoyed a local nine-mile walk from Clough Head Visitor Centre, with lovely views of the depleted reservoirs and the wilder scenery around Hog Lowe Pike and The Naze.

During the walk we were rather besieged by a herd of young cattle and their accompanying bull, so there was a communal sigh of relief when we all passed through safely!

It is worth mentioning here that the Clough Head Visitor Centre has an excellent café and is also very supportive of various charitable causes, so please drop in when you can.

On Friday, July 27, the heatwave hit its peak, making our 12-mile linear walk from Wilpshire (near Blackburn) to Clitheroe a very sweaty affair for the 13 walkers.

Frequent stops were made for rehydration, but the mint choc chip ice creams on offer in the lovely village of Hurst Green proved too great a temptation for some!

Coming up, on Wednesday, August 8, we will be in Yorkshire for a 10/11-mile walk starting from Arncliffe, in the lovely limestone scenery of Littondale.

Arncliffe was the original setting for Emmerdale, so it may be familiar to you.

Please come along if you want to visit one of our favourite walking areas.

Further details about our upcoming walks can be found in the Latest News area of our website at www.rossendaleramblers.co.uk, or you can contact us via secretary Glyn on 01706 561042, or at glynbr45@gmail.com. ROSSENDALE ROTARY CLUB EARLIER this summer, on June 27, Caroline Watts became the club’s president, the first lady president in the Club’s history.

Caroline was born and bred in Rossendale.

She worked originally in the shoe industry before training to be a state enrolled nurse, working at Rossendale General Hospital and later at Middlegate Nursing Home.

Since 1988 she and her husband Adrian took over the running of the newsagents ‘Watts News’ in Waterfoot.

Caroline has two sons and a daughter.

She considers it a great privilege to be the first lady president in Rossendale Rotary.

The club has been involved in organising two major events this summer.

On June 23 a concert in aid of the lifeboats charity was held at St Mary’s Church, Rawtenstall, with the Rossendale Male Voice Choir and Stacksteads Brass Band.

The evening was very enjoyable and successful, with outstanding performances from both the choir and the band.

Following the concert a cheque for £500 was sent to the RNLI.

Plans are well in hand for this year’s Rossendale Round the Hills Walk to be held on Sunday, September 2, starting from Marl Pits Sports Complex on Newchurch Road, Rawtenstall.

Registration at Marl Pits for this free walk is 8am to 10.30am.

The first walkers will start at 8.30am.
