Mary’s pay the price for defensive mistake

-

WEST LANCS LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION TURTON .........................1 HAS ST MARY’S ...........0 STEVE BAYES HASLINGDEN St Mary’s went down to a single goal defeat in their away match against Turton.

This defeat was hard to take as one defensive mistake from St Mary’s in the whole match brought the only goal of the game.

The match started steady for both sides with both defences coping with any danger, but as the match settled down Turton’s defence started passing the ball dangerously across their back line and on more than one occasion they came to loosing the ball to the eager St Mary’s forwards. Whilst at the other end the Turton Forwards fired any chances that fell their way well wide of goal. After all this the teams went in level at the break.

In the second half Mary’s created more chances but the goal eluded them, but at the other end on 67 minutes Turton broke the deadlock when they had a man over at the back post to head home a corner.

St Mary’s pressed for an equaliser as Turton were wasting time at any opportunity and they nearly paid the price when a Scott Wylie effort was clawed away from the top corner by the diving Turton Keeper.

At the other end an equally good save from St Mary’s Ben Nutter kept the score at 1-0.

In the dying minutes St Mary’s desperate appeals for a penalty were waved away by the referee who brought the game to an end.

St Mary’s were unlucky not to get anything out of the game, but they go again on Saturday when they travel to Thornton Cleveleys with a 3pm kick off.
