Regional heats next for HHS girls

SCHOOLS SPORT CATHERINE SMYTH CRICKETERS from Haslingden High School will now compete in the regional heat in March after winning the Rossendale Indoor Cricket competitio­n.

The team of eight competed against Alder Grange High School and All Saints Catholic High School, at Alder Grange.

Against All Saints the U15s team won 72: 24, but against Alder Grange they just beat the home team by one run with a final score of 87: 86.

Hannah Wilson, 13, plays cricket for girls’ team the Tornados in Burnley while Neve Harris Summers, 13, plays for the mixed Edenfield team and a girls’ team, Brooksbott­om, based in Summerseat.

Neve said: “I also play cricket for Lancashire.

“I just love it and I like being a part of the team.

“The England women’s cricket team won the World Cup in 2016, but you don’t hear much about them, however there are a lot more girls getting into cricket now and they are trying to make it more of a mixed sport.

“I prefer the mixed team because the matches are more faster paced.”

Beth Hartwell, 14, is a keen swimmer and also plays for the school football team.

She said: “I have represente­d the school at cricket since Year 7 and so I was picked for the team.”

Hannah is also very sporty and competes for the school in trampolini­ng, cricket, netball, she is a keen cyclist and has competed in biathlons.
