ATEENAGE skier has spoken of her ‘shock’ after being chosen to represent Team GB at the Sarajevo 2019 European Youth Olympic Winter Festival.
Daisi Daniels, of Whitworth, is competing in the alpine skiing as part of a 27-strong team in Bosnia & Herzegovina.
The 16-year-old has been training on the slopes in Vail, Colorado ahead of the multi-sport games this week and will compete in the women’s slalom, giant slalom and mixed parallel team event.
Daisi said: “When I first got selected for Sarajevo, I was shocked. This is incredible and is an opportunity of a lifetime.
“I’m ecstatic now that I have my kit. I’ve represented the British team since I was 12-years-old and even now, every time I go to an international competition it’s amazing.
“When I usually tell people I’m a skier and I’m from Rochdale, they always ask where the snow is.
“I always tell them there’s the Chill Factore and in the city you can take up any sport you want to, there are so many options.
“The support that Rochdale, Whitworth amd Manchester have been giving me is amazing. I thank them a lot.”
Team GB have athletes competing in seven of the eight disciplines and will provide the aspiring Olympians with their first multi-sport experience.
Around 1,500 athletes from 50 European countries will take part, in what is Europe’s largest multisport event.
Lewis Coggins, Team GB’s Chef de Mission for Sarajevo 2019, said: ““The European Youth Olympic Festivals are fantastic opportunities for our young winter athletes to experience life in a multisport Games for the first time and test themselves against the best young athletes in Europe.
“I hope this opportunity will help athletes to develop as well as act as a positive springboard for their future careers.”
