‘He did not deserve this...’

Tributes as murder inquiry launched into ‘generous and kind’ grandad’s death

- CHRIS GEE

TRIBUTES have been paid to a ‘kind and generous giant’ whose death has sparked a murder inquiry.

Barry Tyrie, 69, was found with serious injuries following reports of a fight outside The Trades Club, on Regent Street in Haslingden.

Police launched a murder investigation following his death on Sunday. They arrested four men – aged 57, 25, 30 and 31 – on suspicion of murder. Two of the men have now been released without charge by police.

Trades Club licensee Steve Youds said: “I’ve known Barry for more than 30 years - he came to my wedding. I can promise you that he was an all-round good egg. He was a kind, generous man. If he was doing the lottery he would put a line on for anyone who was with him at the bar.”

Barry Tyrie, 69, was found with serious injuries following reports of a fight outside The Trades Club, on Regent Street in Haslingden.

Police launched a murder investigation and arrested four men on suspicion of murder following his death on Sunday.

Officers said they were called at around 10.20pm following an incident on the pavement directly outside the club.

Despite the efforts of customers and a passerby with first aid training who tried to revive him at the scene, Barry was pronounced dead at hospital a short time later.

Grandfather Barry,

from Haslingden, was described as ‘much loved and a generous fellow’ by his friends at the Trades Club and poignant tributes to him have been left outside, including a spanner recognising his work as a mechanic.

Licensee Steve Youds said: “I’ve knew Barry for more than 30 years, he came to my wedding. I can promise you that he was an all-round good egg. He was a kind, generous man, he wouldn’t see anyone short.

“I’ve known him to hear that a mum and her children hadn’t been on holiday for a while and pay for them to spend a few nights in Blackpool.

“If he was doing the lottery he would put a line on for anyone who was with him at the bar.

“We have a monthly outing from the club and Barry would be the first to sign up. If anyone was a little short of payment he would see them right.

“My nickname for him was ‘Shiny Barry’ because he was always well turned out and clean shaven.”

Steve said that before retirement, Barry had worked on the roads, taking pride in his role helping construct the Haslingden bypass and the M66.

Steve added: “Everyone at the Trades Club raised a glass and did a toast to Barry on Monday evening, exactly a day after this happened.”

Barry’s former sister-inlaw Pat Tyrie says the ‘lovable’ character, who is survived by his brother Pete and nephew Aston, will be remembered by all who knew him.

She said: “Rest In Paradise Barry. Reunited with your son, Basil. You didn’t deserve to go the way you did and your death has hurt and shocked so many people. Everyone who speaks of you has nothing but love and respect for you and all share happy and funny memories of you. Your lovable character and personality will be remembered by family and all the friends that were lucky enough to know you, for a very long time to come. You will be sorely missed but now you have gained your wings so fly high with the angels now Barry. “God bless you.” Barry’s friend Bill Grundy said: “Barry was a gentle giant, a good man. I’d describe him as a gentleman of the old school. It’s a very sad loss.”

Jo Crankshaw posted on our Facebook page: “He was one of the good guys! Haslingden will surely miss him!”

Sharon McMahon added: “R.I.P. Quiet Man. You are with the angels now Barry.”
