ROSSENDALE RAMBLERS
A COUPLE of wonderful walks have been enjoyed the week.
The first, on Wednesday, August 21, was from Kettlewell in Upper Wharfedale.
Although we arrived in battering rain, the 11 mile walk itself was mostly dry, and the views in the sunshine were spectacular, no camera could capture them like the eye can.
Then on a very hot Sunday, August 25, we broke our short Sunday walk record by welcoming 25 walkers to a gentler six mile walk around Darwen Moor.
Coming up, on Sunday, September 1, a number of our members will be joining a very large group of walkers doing the 18 or 15 mile Round the Hills walk, organised by the Rotary Club of Rossendale.
Then on Wednesday, September 4 we have a 10 mile walk from Todmorden, which is an excellent base for a whole variety of scenic and sometimes quite challenging walks.
Then on Thursday, September 5 we have our penultimate two hour evening pub walk of the year, starting at 7pm from Casked Micropub in Rawtenstall.
Please be aware that this walk is likely to end in the dark, so torches are advisable.

ROSSENDALE AVIATION SOCIETY
ON Wednesday, August 21 a splendid evening was enjoyed at the Rossendale Aviation Society.
Andy Heap, one of our founding members, visited the society from New Zealand, where he now resides.
Andy’s talk was entitled ‘From Pollard’s Lane to Mount Cupola’ whereby he charted his history as an aviation enthusiast, photographer, pilot and gliding instructor.
Pollard’s Lane is alongside the United States Air Force base at RAF Mildenhall and Mount Cupola is in Nelson Lakes National Park in South Island, New Zealand, where Andy goes gliding.
The images and stories covered many topics, perhaps the most interesting and alarming were the images of wildfires heading towards Andy’s house from which Andy and his partner, Lesley, were evacuated for two weeks.
Fortunately the wind changed as the fire reached a neighbour’s property and the house was spared.
Chairman Chris Berry thanked Andy on behalf of the audience and invited him to draw the raffle, which he did – pulling out his mum’s ticket.
Our next meeting is on Wednesday, September 4, and our much travelled member Lloyd Robinson will present ‘South Africa in Springtime’ - a journey through the eastern provinces from Cape Town to Durban, and onwards through KwaZulu Natal to Johannesburg.
Our meetings take place at Haslingden Cricket Club and start at 8pm.
All are welcome to our enjoyable meetings.
