QUESTION ANSWERED

THANKS to the Scribbler!

I see in this week’s Free Press (‘ Peace pact on plastic pots’, September 20) that you have published an answer to my questions in your letters page earlier this year about Rossendale Council’s confusing advice as to the types of plastic we can recycle in the blue bin, specifically the black food trays and pots.

Previously, Jackie Oakes has said in your pages that we should not recycle them.

However the official council advice on the leaflets that have been given to each household for at least the last two years tell us that we should.

Your column now suggests we should ignore the colour and look at the code inside the triangle which represents the type of plastic.

This seems clear and comes from LCC rather than RBC, who have been extremely quiet on the subject.

Let’s hope the lack of ‘Official’ advice as to what we should do will be rectified as the 2019/ 2020 leaflet is distributed.

Maybe we can view it as an exercise in communication? Stuart Aspin Newchurch

WALKWAY TO DANGER

AGAIN I have tripped up on the Bank Street uneven pavements. This is the fourth time. Something should be done about these dangerous walkways.

At the same time the cobbles now that winter is coming will become a hazard, they become slippy and hard to cross the road.

Why were these were even laid in the first place is beyond me?

Bank Street should be reported to the Health and Safety. Jim Clarke OAP via email

HAPPY DAYS ON THE HILLS

I WAS very pleased to read in the Rossendale Free Press that the 52nd ‘ Round the Hills’ walk was again a success.

I and some work mates from ‘ Mullards’ Waterfoot were talked into taking part in the first walk by a fellow male worker who was involved in organising the event.

The weather was kind and we all finished the walk with seconds to spare. I didn’t go to work on the Monday as I couldn’t get my shoes on for the blisters.

I’m 76 years old now and remember it well, Happy Days! Mrs Eileen Hollway (née Hoyle) Nuttall Lane Ramsbottom

WE DESERVE BETTER THAN U

FIRST they were going to demolish the entire Town Hall Building but had to do a u- turn.

The bus station was going to be a two-storey building but they had to do a u- turn.

The road around the bus station were going to permanently closed, but they had to do a uturn. There was going to be a cinema but yet another u- turn, then the Leader of the Council announced a recognisable world renowned hotel chain was coming to town, but another u- turn.

We were told several retailers were in place and about to sign up to move in to the bus station and phase 2 retail units, but yet one more u-turn.

The local plan was flawed after years of work and they had to do a u- turn and start over again.

Now we have another u-turn over Haslingden Cemetery.

Let’s also not forget the Empty Homes Scandal which has already cost millions but no one held to account.

Whilst all this clearly demonstrates the Council’s inability to plan and think matters through, it also shows poor management, a lack of co- ordination and dreadful leadership.

What council tax payers should be concerned about is that each one of these uturns has wasted vast amounts of their cash, but then in addition further costs are racked up in designing and planning for the replacement idea.

People of Rossendale deserve better. Michael Pickup Newchurch Road Rawtenstall
