Tesco to return after Jack-ing in discount store

-

A TESCO store will return to Rawtenstall, bosses have confirmed, less than six months after replacing it with their own discount outlet Jack’s.

The former superstore, on Bocholt Way, was replaced in April by Jack’s, specialising in bulk-buy cheaper, own-brand goods.

But the supermarket giant confirmed this week that the ‘trial’ had not worked out and - following customer feedback - they will reverse the decision and open a ‘refreshed’ store on the site in November, offering the products and brands “customers know and love”.

Jason Tarry, Tesco UK CEO, said: “We are really pleased to be bringing Tesco back to Rawtenstall in time for Christmas.

“We have listened to customer feedback and look forward to serving customers in the refreshed store.”

Existing store services including the Costa, pharmacy and petrol filling station will remain.

In a statement, Tesco said: “Earlier this year Tesco launched a trial bulk-buy Jack’s store but following local customer feedback it has been decided that a Tesco store will serve this community better. All colleagues currently employed by Jack’s will transfer over to Tesco, with new additional jobs also available.”

The store will formally transfer on October 20, with the new Tesco opening on November 21. Tesco said customers have responded positively to their 10 Jack’s stores across the UK, adding they are currently exploring alternative locations to trial the bulk-buy Jack’s offer.
