Music rekindles memories
AN afternoon of music helped rekindle memories for people living with dementia.
Organisers Dementia Friendly Rossendale said the event was a ‘huge success’ as 120 people packed into Rossendale Rugby Club at Marl Pits in Rawtenstall.
Residents and staff from care homes along with several people who live in their own homes and their carers enjoyed a feast of entertainment and an afternoon tea.
Five trustees along with a team of volunteers and four students from AG6 ensured the afternoon ran smoothly.
Welcoming the guests to the event were members from Rossendale Ukulele Club, who serenaded the tables.
Singer Kyle Harrison was a huge hit getting the crowd singing and dancing and it wasn’t long before arms were in the air and people were singing their hearts out to familiar songs from the 50s and 60s.
Kyle even added a George Ezra and Jess Glynn number.
Trustee Sue Hemsley said: “We have previously held a music afternoon in a church, but the care homes could not attend because it was a Saturday, so we changed it to a Tuesday afternoon and it has been a huge success.
“There were so many happy smiles in the room.”
Homes from all over Rossendale were represented along with the Reminiscence Cafés from Haslingden and Bacup.
Sue Burnside, activity co-ordinator at
Haslingden Hall Home, said: “This is the first time we have come to one of the Dementia Friendly Rossendale’s events and we will be back again. It has been so good.”
Resident Marie O’Garr, who is living with dementia, said: “I have been singing since I was at school. I enjoy it.”
Trustee Paula Bond added: “It is all about bringing the community together by spending the donations we receive so everyone can enjoy a lovely free afternoon making new memories and rekindling old ones.
“People are isolated these days; this brings everyone together.”
