Praise for pupils
PRAISE was heaped on the class of 2019 from Haslingden High School, after students achieved way above the national average for GCSEs.
A total of 76 per cent of students achieved the ‘standard pass’ of grade 4 or above in both English and maths, compared to the national average of 63pc.
At the school’s awards’ evening, Headteacher Mark Jackson said:
“In addition, 50pc of all our students achieved a grade 5 - ‘strong pass’ - or better in both English and maths, compared to a national average of 43pc.”
The year group also recorded a further achievements including a third of all English literature students achieving grade 7 or above and 22pc of all grades awarded being grade 7 or above.
While acknowledging the amazing results, Mr Jackson said:
“We are equally delighted with the students who performed exceptionally well and made significant progress with us, yet may have achieved grades below a grade 4.
“At Haslingden High School we understand the importance of academic success, but also believe passionately in providing a wide range of opportunities and experiences that allow our students to pursue their aspirations, develop their talents and grow into confident, wellrounded adults.
“Tonight is clear testament to that and I would like to take this opportunity to thank our highly skilled, dedicated and hard-working staff who are committed to providing our students with the very best all round education.”
Special guest was archer Danielle Brown MBE, a double Paralympic gold medalist and five times world champion.
She handed out Special Awards along with awards for excellence and endeavour in the different faculty subjects.
Special Awards were as follows: the Eve Challinger Award for KS4 Top Achiever – Thomas Walters, the Headteacher’s Award – Serena Cape, the Rotary Club of Rossendale Award for Services to our Community – Emilia Harrison, the PTFA Prize for Good Sportsmanship – Alfie Edmondson, the Edith McCarthy Prize for Cheerful Endeavour – Veronika Cerna, the Gemma Turner Award for Contributions to the Performing Arts – Holly O’Mars and Mia Duxbury and the Matthew Densfield Award for Contribution to the Music Department – Katie Taylor.
