Music and musicals in Manchester for students
STUDENTS from Whitworth Community High School attended two professional performances in Manchester to see The Hallé and a production of We Will Rock You.
The musicians visited The Bridgewater Hall and The Palace Theatre and they had their own views on the productions.
Of The Hallé, Isabella Taylor, 13, said:
“It was really interesting and they explained the different parts of the orchestra and how they had evolved over the years.
“I play the cornet myself and my favourite instrument in the orchestra was the bassoon, but the French horn was also amazing.
“I liked the romantic era and especially Flight of the Valkyries, one of my favourites.”
Madeleine KelseyLyons, 13, said:
The best part was when they separated out the different parts of the orchestra.
“I play the clarinet so I liked hearing about the woodwind section.”
Tuba player Eleanor Dermody, 15, plays for Whitworth Vale and Healey Band and Rochdale.
She said: “I thought it was good when they brought the tuba out and pulled it apart to show how it went together.”
Their reviews of the Ben Elton musical at The Palace were mixed.
Isabella said: “I cried when my teacher said that the trip was on because I have wanted to watch the musical for three to four years.
“I did like the story and the actor that played Ozzy Osbourne – her voice was amazing.”
Madeleine found it annoying that the words of some of Queen’s most famous songs had been changed.
She said: “I was singing radio Ga Ga and then I heard them singing ‘Internet Ga Ga’.
“It annoyed me that they had changed the lyrics.
“Don’t change what is perfect.”
They described the actor playing Galileo as having a voice like Freddie Mercury, looking like Brendon Urie of Panic! At the Disco and dancing like Michael Jackson.
Eleanor added: “For me it worked and some of the lines were so funny.”
