Jenson’s creative key rings raising funds for the NHS

-

A SCHOOLBOY is selling hand painted key rings to raise money for the NHS after they saved his life at birth.

Jenson Bork, who is visually impaired due to a condition called Septooptic dysplasia, has been spending his lockdown getting creative to help support healthcare workers.

The seven-year-old, from Bacup, came up with the idea after watching his dad, Jamie, do woodwork in the family home.

“It was his idea,” said his mum Romanii Fitton. “Because he is visually impaired he can’t do the writing or reading really that the school sent him.

“This is something to keep him busy. He can type NHS out and then his dad fits and engraves them and he colours in the pattern using his crayons.”

Jenson had a difficult start to life, he was 10 weeks premature and spent his first four weeks in hospital, one of which was in intensive care.

He was put on lifesaving thyroid medication which he has since come off, but must take regular trips to Manchester children’s hospital for checkups - until he is 18.

“They realised part of his brain was absent,” added Romanii. “He needed thyroid medication to keep him going.

“He has come off it now but is still under the hospital and they see him regularly.

“He is due to go again in August but I am hoping things will be going back to normal by then.”

Romanii, who is a foster carer and a carer for three of her family members, said that it has been nice to have some positivity

through Jenson’s work.

“People have been really supportive,” she said.

“We ordered 100 of the hearts and he has sold all of them.

“Some of the people who have bought them have told Jenson to keep them and give them to the doctors and nurses he sees for his appointments.

“He only set out to raise £100 but he has already doubled that and we are now ordering more.”
