‘Smoking car’sparks chase on mad night Fury at 2am fireworks all over town Hundreds sign boy racer petition

WITNESSES reported a vehicle emitting ‘tonnes of smoke’ being chased around Rawtenstal­l’s streets, as a police helicopter patrolled the skies above.

A man, 22, has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.

Fireworks were later set off from ‘multiple locations’, in a separate earlyhours incident. Locals were angry at being woken by loud bangs and frightened pets between midnight and 2am.

Meanwhile, 780 people have backed a petition for a crackdown on ‘dangerous’ lockdown speeding on our roads.

POLICE were called to an incident after a vehicle failed to stop for a mounted patrol.

According to eyewitness­es, a silver car was involved in a brief chase before being brought to a stop in Rawtenstal­l on Tuesday evening, August 18.

There were reports of a vehicle ‘with tonnes of smoke’ coming out of it being chased around Kay Street and Bank Street. A police helicopter was also involved in the incident, and was spotted flying above Haslingden and Rawtenstal­l.

Police have confirmed a mounted unit was making patrols in the area following reports of anti-social behaviour in Whitaker Park and Marl Pits.

A suspect who made off from the vehicle which failed to stop for officers was detained.

The pursuit was spotted in various locations, including Kay Street, Bank Street, Manchester Road, and Bury Road.

A Lancashire Police spokespers­on said: “Mounted police were on standard patrol in the area as someone made-off from a vehicle that failed to stop for officers in the east of county. But they have now been detained - around Manchester

Road [Haslingden].”

A 22-year-old man from Blackburn was arrested on suspicion of drink driving and dangerous driving and is in custody.
