Relaxing of Covid rules is welcomed in Valley

-

ROSSENDALE council bosses have welcomed the government’s decision to ease the additional Covid-19 lockdown restrictions recently introduced to the Valley.

When Rossendale’s inclusion in an East Lancashire and Greater Manchester-wide local lockdown was announced on July 30, council leader Alyson Barnes had said Rossendale had been “mopped up” in the lockdown for geographic reasons and called for a “more nuanced” approach.

In response to Friday’s announcement, Coun Barnes said “We’re extremely pleased that the restrictions in Rossendale have been eased.

“It means the measures taken and the advice given by the council are working. We have had a positive response from local people and businesses supporting the efforts to restrict the transmission of Covid–19 and we’d like to thank them for adhering to the guidelines.

“However, it’s important we don’t become complacent.

“With the weather forecast to be brighter this weekend, which may encourage people to go out and socialise, it’s vitally important that people still follow the national guidelines.

“We want people to enjoy themselves, to be able to go out and support our local businesses, but we must also remember the virus has not gone away. All local people should continue to follow the national guidance including social distancing and wearing a face covering where appropriate.”

The council continues to support its neighbouring councils in Lancashire and Greater Manchester in their on-going efforts to keep the virus under control.

Coun Barnes added: “Clear plans are in place throughout the county and these actions are having a positive effect.

“We look forward to other parts of the North West having their additional lockdown restrictions lifted at the appropriate time.”
