A15-YEAR-OLD boy who was accused of stabbing a former Rossendale teenager has been found not guilty of his murder.

The teenager was acquitted of fatally stabbing James Laurie in the incident in Southampton on January 19.

He was cleared at Winchester Crown Court by jury on August 25.

The 15-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty to possession of a bladed weapon, at a previous hearing. He was remanded in custody and will be sentenced for this offence at a later date.

James, formerly of Bacup, was fatally injured during the incident in the Thornhill area.

The 17-year-old was taken to Southampton General Hospital in a serious condition, but later died.

A tribute night and fundraiser was held on January 25 at The Waterloo pub in Bacup where more than £1,200 was raised towards the funeral of musician James, whose nickname was ‘Scarz’.

Former partner Nicole Leigh Walker said at the time: “James was in care and he lived up here for a few years, then moved back away, but then came back up as he had a lot of people up here.

“He was a very loyal, bubbly lad who fitted in with anyone around here.

“It’s devastating to know James didn’t even reach 18, never had the chance to drive, have children, the things most people take for granted in life.”

Detective Inspector Lee McClellan said they were “obviously disappointed” by the verdict, but respected the jury’s decision.

He added: “This was a tragic incident that led to the loss of a young life.

“This case highlights the dangers that come with carrying knives and the devastation these senseless acts cause, not only to those involved but also to their friends and families.”
