Snow brings chaos to roads
SNOWFALL across caused chaos across the area’s road network, schools and bin collections on Tuesday.
Eleven local authority Valley schools were reported by Lancashire County Council to have fully shut on Tuesday due to adverse weather, with Bacup, Rawtenstall, Waterfoot and Stacksteads the worst affected areas.
Police urged people to consider whether their journey was ‘necessary’, and to slow down if they have to be out on the roads. Rossendale council said crews would only be accessing areas where it was safe to do so, meaning “some delays” in collection.
Police in Rossendale were called to Grane Road after a black car flipped in a collision and came to land on its roof.
Officers who attended the crash shortly before 9am said the incident was “another example of how not to drive in the snow.”
Recovery was called to the scene and the driver had a “lucky” escape, with no injuries occurring.
AA Range Rover smashed into the central reservation on the A56 Haslingden Bypass.
Lancashire Police’s Tactical Operations unit tweeted: “Awaiting recovery for the third accident of the day on the A56 caused by driver error.
“Slow down in the snow. Drive to arrive.”
Travel website INRIX said: “Slow traffic due to snow on A56 between
M66 (Ramsbottom Junction, Edenfield) and M65 J8 (Accrington, Hapton).
Rossendale Police said the snowfall also resulted in a stranded bus on Rochdale Road at Edenfield. The
Rawtenstall vaccination hub was also able to open, with people asked to attend appointments if they could safely do so.
Staff and volunteers worked hard to ensure the venue was as safe as possible by gritting paths.
More snow could hit the borough from the weekend, with temperatures due to plunge into the first half of next week.
