Tributes paid to village’s ‘force of nature’

- STUART PIKE

TRIBUTES have been paid to much-loved Edenfield community figure Betty Garvey following her peaceful death at her home last month.

Memories to the champion crafter and “force of nature” have been shared in the Edenfield Parish Church newsletter EPiC.

A mother-of-three, Kim, Jane, and Penny, she was a grandmother and greatgrandmother and was married for 20 very happy years to her beloved Arthur.

The EPiC tribute stated: “She was always such good company, a great raconteur and a first class friend to many. And what a full life she lived, simply inspirational, full of joy, sometimes naughty with a cheeky laugh. What a force of nature she was, always busy, always with a story to tell, always exuberant and full of life and always happy to give advice.

“She was a well-respected teacher in Bury and after retirement moved to Market Street, Edenfield. What a breath of fresh air she was to the village, she joined almost every society and club going and became a regular worshipper at church.

“One Sunday morning she announced she was off to York to become a full time student, thrilled to be starting an Art degree. She even bought some denims and Doc Martens to look the part!”

Coun Anne Cheetham said: “She was very much involved with the Edenfield Horticultural Society and one of the leading lights in the redesign of the memorial gardens. She was involved in many community activities and gave talks about the things she had done. She will be a character who will be missed.”

Betty’s funeral will be on Friday, February 12 at 11.15am at Edenfield Parish Church (by invitation only), followed by cremation at Radcliffe crematorium. Flowers will be welcome or donations if desired to St George’s Chapel, Windsor. For all enquiries contact Silletts Funeral Service, Spring Lane, Radcliffe, Manchester, M26 2TQ.
