-

AVALLEY school is in mourning following the death of its “wonderful” headteacher.

Broadway Primary School in Haslingden, said Mrs Catherine Feber passed away on Friday, February 19, following a short illness.

The school was closed on Monday, February 22 to all children, as a mark of respect.

Chris Bolton, deputy headteacher at Broadway Primary School said: “We are all shocked and deeply upset by this tragic news.

“Catherine was a fantastic headteacher and a wonderful person. She always did her best to support pupils at Broadway.

“She continued to work tirelessly for the school even when she had become unwell as her passion for the children was her driving force and brought her great joy.

“She will be missed by pupils, parents, teachers and the entire school community. Our thoughts and condolences go out to Catherine’s family, her friends and everyone who knew her at this very sad and difficult time.”

In a letter to parents on Friday, Mr Bolton said Mrs Feber, who was headteacher for three years, worked tirelessly to ensure that the children of Broadway got the best education.

He added: “She steered Broadway through the pandemic with compassion for all the school community. For the staff and I, Catherine was a dear friend and colleague, and I know you will agree that her untimely death will leave a huge space at Broadway. I am sure that you will join me, the staff and governors in sending our condolences to her family. Please contact me should you have any queries or concerns during this sad time. We thank you for your support and understanding.”

A special area for tributes has been designated next to the tree on the front hill of school, while poignant floral tributes have also gathered. A tribute book is being put together for the family made up of messages, emails and tributes.

In a second letter this week Mr Bolton, who has been asked by the governors to take on the role of acting head, thanked parents for their “wonderful messages, emails, tributes, and best wishes following the loss of Mrs Feber, who took over from predecessor Paul Stanley in 2018.

The school will be closed on Wednesday, March 3 to all key worker and vulnerable children for Mrs Feber’s funeral.
