Hair-raising idea grows on youngster

-

A SCHOOLGIRL is to grow her hair until September and then donate the cut off locks to make wigs for children with cancer.

Lily Taylor, from Whitworth, will donate her hair to the Little Princess Trust - and has also raised more than £700 for the cancer charity.

Lily, who attends St Bartholomew’s C of E Primary, was inspired to grow her hair after watching a video from the charity with her mum Charlotte Keatings.

The eight-year-old now plans to grow hair until September while also fundraising.

Step-dad Andy Cannon said it is even more of a challenge considering

Lily has never been to the hairdressers.

“Ever since she was born she’s never been to a hairdressers, she doesn’t like them, so it’s quite a big step for her to say ‘I’m going to have my hair cut,” said Andy, 31.

“She watched an online video with her mum about children with cancer losing their hair. She got quite upset and wanted to do some fundraising for them so she decided she was going to cut her hair off. She is going to leave it grow until September.”

Andy also said he was really proud of Lily for donating her hair to be made into a wig.

He said: “She’s an amazing little girl. She watched this video and decided that she’s going to conquer her fear and also have her hair cut off to provide wigs for children with cancer. I don’t think there’s much more an eight-year-old could do to raise money like that.

“We originally put the £500 target and the first time I saw it there was £46 in it. We showed Lily and she did a video saying thank you to everyone who donated. From there it took off. It’s been amazing and the donations people are giving is unbelievable - especially at the moment, with the pandemic and people being furloughed and off work.”

Lily lives on Wallbank Drive with her siblings Alfie, six, Harper, who is nearly two, and Carter, one.
