CURRY FAVOUR

-

HASLINGDENBASED Veterans In Communities is unable to hold its quiz in a restaurant this year so a ‘Bring your own’ Curry and Quiz will be held virtually.

As the VIC Choir has been unable to perform and fundraisers and events have been cancelled, the charity is hoping the virtual quiz will raise cash as well as uniting supporters and members.

The quiz will be on Friday, March 26, from 7pm and costs £5 per team to enter, but extra donations will be gratefully received.

To book a team, visit www.veteransincommunities.org and follow the links from the home page, or call Amy Thompson on 01706 833180.

I’M replying to Councillor Peter Steen’s comments within his column (March 5), where he was treated to Alan Neal’s Annual Monologue with regards to the removal of the Rate Support Grant, which from memory was paid from Business Rates and not Council Tax.

I’m flattered he took his opportunity to name me in his and I quote the last column before both Rossendale Borough & Lancashire County Council’s Elections in May.

However once again it would appear that Councillor Steen has failed to comprehend the major impact both his Government’s total lack of support for both local people and also our communities across Rossendale has had.

Since 2011 the Government has now reduced Local Government funding by more than 65%, this is the same Government who refused to provide our local children with school meals during the half-term school holidays in October 2020.

Fortunately, once again, it was local people and local organisations who once again had to step up to meet all those families’ needs due to the Covid pandemic.

Finally, the one area Councillor Steen failed to acknowledge was the fact both he and his controlling Conservative Group on Lancashire County Council took their joint decision to increase our Council Tax by 3.99%. All our hard pressed families across Rossendale will now face even more trying times thanks to those

Conservatives county councillors, who have voted such a large increase in our Council Tax - given they are now taking in excess of more than 70% of our hard earned money. Councillor Alan Neal via email
