MUST USE OUR CLIMATE TOOLS

- Marie-Louise Charlton Holcombe Road

HOW uncanny that the edition ( March 26) in which you printed my historical letter (‘ Land could be an asset’, Your Views) and the article ‘Still no decision on controversial homes bid’ that the BBC news announce what I have argued all along that this kind of particular unique piece of land is an invaluable carbon absorber.

This fact is crucial in man’s planning for future existence.

Nowhere and at no point amidst Taylor Wimpey’s facile comments and defences is the issue of climate control, man’s single biggest problem, mentioned.

The loss of this unique piece of land and all it represents cannot be mitigated by any other man made grassland.

This piece of land is a result of nature. Because of our selfishness we have failed in our responsibility to be guardians and stewards of the earth.

“We need only take a frank look at the facts to see that our common home is falling into serious disrepair” ( ibid., 61).

We have polluted it, we have despoiled it, endangering our very lives. For this reason, various international and local movements have sprung up in order to appeal to our consciences.

I deeply appreciate these initiatives; still it will be necessary for our children to take to the streets to teach us the obvious: we have no future if we destroy the very environment that sustains us.” Pope Francis Earth Day 2020.

Rossendale Borough Council are recorded as being committed to fighting climate change.

Here we have one of their biggest tools with which to win that fight.

Not to use it would suggest to the contrary.
