Raising a glass to pub open day

- STUART PIKE

AMAJOR step towards normality was toasted this week as pubs, hair salons, non- essential stores and gyms reopened across Rossendale.

The latest relaxation of Covid lockdown, starting on Monday, April 12, saw outdoor hospitality allowed with both pubs and customers anxious to make the most of the opportunity.

In almost comically grim timing, the big day was nearly scuppered by April snow, but hardy punters of all ages were determined not to miss out.

Megan Hayhurst, head of bar staff at the Rose n Bowl in Stacksteads, said all their staff worked really hard to make the first day “a raving success”.

She said: “We were full up for most of the day - which is fantastic to see that the local community are supporting the local pubs and, more importantly, trust us to make sure we have everything in place that they need for a happy safe trip,

“Working outside has its difficulties what with marquees, WiFi connections for card payments and of course the grand old Great British ‘spring’ weather. We owe a big thank you to Jon and Carol for making it all work together and the staff for pulling it off.”

Megan said local pubs have worked tirelessly throughout the pandemic (and sometimes to no avail) to make sure that local communities are still able to socialise and come together in a safe and fun environment.

“We’re really proud of all the local pubs for their tenacity to make the comeback better than the downfall,” she added.

Rossendale Leisure Trust’s Adrenaline Centre, Marl Pits Leisure Centre, Pioneer Community Health Studio and Whitworth Leisure Centre all reopened this week as well.

Gym user Liz, pictured right, said she was “so glad Pioneer gym has opened again”, adding: “Coming back has been a great experience as it feels like a totally safe and clean environment to train in.”

Ken Masser, Chief Executive of RLT, said: “It’s brilliant to be open again and to continue to provide support and opportunities for people to be active and improve their wellbeing.”

He thanked Rossendale council for its “significant” support during the pandemic.

Dave Fuller, manager of The Hill ( Ski Rossendale), added: “It is truly gratifying to once again see our customers enjoying all the activities at The Hill. Outdoor sport is so important to everyone’s health and wellbeing.”

Rossendale MP Jake Berry visited Rawtenstall market ahead of its full reopening on Thursday.

He said: “Let’s get out there and support our local traders and make sure that we leave this pandemic as a stronger community and stronger economy than when we went in.”
