Bright display at Broughton Hall from RRC

- CYCLING DEREK SCHOFIELD

COMPETITIVE cycling continued at the weekend, both on and off road, starting with the 2nd round of the NLTTA Spoco series time trial at Lowther, near Shap.

Unsurprisingly, this was a tough 15 mile circuit, won overall by Ben Stead of 3RT racing.

The sole Valley representative was Patrick Hickey who posted a time of 36:09 in 5th place.

Nearer to home, the 4th round of the ‘Live in Hope’ CX series took place at Broughton Hall and there was plenty of local interest. In dry and bright conditions there was some excellent racing, the first to show being Helmshore junior, Elsie Haygarth, finishing 8th in the U14 girl’s class.

Father and event organiser, Dave Haygarth, managed time out to ride in the V50 event and rode to a superb podium 3rd spot, no doubt using his course knowledge to good effect.

In the same race, Tony Bowler just missed out on a top 10 with 12th.

Next Valley resident was Carl Nelson in 31st with Mick Taylor showing some improvement to 39th, Richie Watts came through to 47th with Bryn Weaste 50th.

Graham Wright tightened his grip on the series V70 class and 53rd overall, with the unfortunate Ian Greenwood retiring with mechanical problems in his first showing in club colours.

In the V40/45 race, Phil Simcock of the Ramsbottom based JMC club had a storming ride to 5th place overall, with clubmate Carl Salisbury 51st. Iain Hazell was another unfortunate RRC member, completing three laps before mechanical gremlins forced his retirement.

The star of the whole event, though, was British

Cycling and regular World Competitor Anna Kay who, in the combined V50 Men and Women’s event passed all but the 2 leading male riders, from a 2 minute delay start for the women.

Club rides continue at 6.15pm on Thursdays from Kay St, with an easier charity fundraising ride on Sunday at 9am. Full details will be on the club’s social media sites.
