- STEVE BAYES

WEST LANCS LEAGUE REGIONAL CUP

ROSSENDALE FC .........1 BURNLEY UNITED .......0

ROSSENDALE FC made it two wins from two games in the group stages of the regional Cup with a hard fought narrow 1-0 win against fellow second division side Burnley United.

From the outset it was very obvious that this match would be a tough physical challenge for the stags against strong opposition.

Rossendale pressed forward from the start and almost broke the deadlock as early as the ninth minute when Tom Hulme got clear in the area his fierce shot was pushed wide by the Burnley keeper the ball was picked up by Scott Wylie who from a tight angle could only find the side netting.

Rossendale forced several corners in the first period which caused chaos in the Burnley defence and desperate defending and safe goalkeeping kept the score line blank. Burnley’s ball over the top of the defence did cause some concern at times but was dealt with by the Rossendale defenders.

Burnley’s niggling challenges yielded several free kicks for the Stags which failed to bring any reward. Any good football by either side was being broken up and the game turned slightly scrappy. The teams went in level at the break.

The second half started with Rossendale again pushing forwarded with Burnley responding with balls over the top of the defence. It was going to take something special to break the deadlock and it was on the hour that the deadlock was broken with a special goal.

A Jack Cassidy throw in on the right found Scott Wylie in the area with his back to the goal, he turned his marker and went passed two more defenders and smashed the ball low and hard into the far corner of the net for a great solo goal.

The Rossendale defence stood firm against the Burnley response to going behind, and Sipocz in the Rossendale goal was dealing with balls being played into the area without really being challenged.

For the second game in a row the opposition keeper had to leave the game injured, his replacement stood firm to deny the Rossendale forwards, but as the game neared the end Rossendale came very close to a second goal when Paul Stannard chased the ball out wide and put in a great cross where the unmarked Tom Hartley headed the ball towards the corner of the net which brought a remarkable save from the stand in keeper tipping the ball round the post with a finger tip save.

The game ended with a narrow win for the stags. A great all round team performance from all the players maintained Rossendale’s 100% record in the group.

A hard physical match that was won with a special solo goal.

The other two matches in the group again brought wins for the 2 premier league teams with Turton beating Haslingden St.Mary’s 2-0 and Hurst Green beating

Chipping 4-0, with 2 group games played premier League Turton and Hurst Green and Rossendale have 100% records.

Rosendale’s next game in the group will be a tough challenge when Premier League Turton visit Marl Pitts on Saturday, Turton were top of the Premier League table when all league matches were cancelled earlier in the season due to lockdown, the match kicks off at 3pm.
