Students take hike to earn royal award

- JOSEPH RICHARDS

AGROUP of students have completed an expedition to earn their Duke of Edinburgh bronze award.

Six teams of students from Whitworth Community High School completed a hike around the local area and school before camping overnight in the school field.

Due to the pandemic the expedition had to take place on school grounds and the students had to have a negative Covid test before they started.

PE teacher Mr Cawley said that before the students took part in the expedition, the school made sure they had already completed the other disciplines for the badge, volunteering, learning a skill and physical exercise.

He said: “We had 34 students taking part in six teams and they completed a hike in the local area around the school and then all camped overnight on the school field.

“All of the participants had to have negative Covid tests before they could participate.

“There were six routes around school and each team did a different route the following day.”

Mr Cawley added that the school was proud to maintain its 100 per cent record of every student that finishes the expedition achieving their badge.

Carmela Rea, 14, completed circuit training for her physical, learnt cooking for her skill and volunteered for the Osborne Trust, a charity that supports cancer patients, where she raised money by holding raffles.

She said: “The expedition was good and on the first day we went to places I knew but on the second day I discovered areas local to me that I had never been to.

“I enjoyed learning how to use a map and compass because I had never done that before and it was good to learn different skills.”

It is hoped next year the school will be able to again offer students the chance to earn their Silver Award.
