ASAILING race event hosted by a Valley sailing club was labelled a ‘resounding success’ by organisers.

Rossendale Valley Sailing Club hosted its first ever Northern Travellers Series Event on Saturday June 12.

The event was organised by the International Topper Class Association and was part of the Northern Travellers Series, with RVSC stepping in at the last moment to make sure the event went ahead.

A topper boat is a single handed sailing dinghy.

Founded in 1965, the club, in Rossendale, offers sail training and taster sessions for new members, young and old, and said the event was a great opportunity for people to get a taste of what goes on at the club.

A spokesperson for the sailing club said: “It was an amazing event. Over 30 boats took to the waters and competed over several races, with crowds of over hundred cheering them all the way.

“We want to extend our thanks to all the local volunteers.

“They did a sterling job and made sure the event ran smoothly.”

The spokesperson added that they hope it is the first of many events to be hosted by the club.

They said: “The weather was glorious, ideal for sailing, making the races even more exciting.

“The vast range of sailors, both young and old, provided the club a great opportunity to showcase its facilities.

“Hopefully, it’s the first of many events we hold here at the club.

“The success of the event is proof that sailing is as exciting as ever. If you’re interested in joining the club or getting on the water, RVSC will be holding taster sessions once restrictions have been fully lifted.”
