Borough punch above weight in pre-season...

- BY STEVE BROWN

BOROUGH continued their pre-season preparations in good form with games against Winsford United and Barnoldswick Town.

And with both clubs one level higher than Borough in the footballing pyramid it would be another stern test for this young side to pit their wits against strong opposition.

Saturday in glorious sunshine Brent Peters’ men played out an entertaining 3-3 draw against the team from Cheshire.

And then followed that up with a competitive and physical encounter in a 1-0 win over Barnoldswick Town

The build-up to the new season has been positive for the Borough with new players being introduced and current members of the squad all hitting the ground running coming back into pre-season.

The fitness levels have been impressive throughout the build up and this can only be testament to the hard work and dedication of the management team.

The manager, head coach, David Felgate, fitness and the conditioning work of Jimmy Petruzzi and club captain, Michael Gervin, have collectively made sure that the squad have remained fit during Covid – with regular Strava sessions and the latest fitness technology to follow their progress.

Borough start their new season at home to Cleator Moor Cletic on July 31 and will be hoping to get off to a positive start.

Midfielder Callum Hewitt said. “Pre-season has been really enjoyable.

“All of the lads have come back in excellent condition, and you can tell from the games we’ve played against top opposition that the fitness levels have been key in those results.

“When you’re playing against sides that are in leagues above you and you’re still able to compete both in fitness levels and technical ability you know that the team is going in the right direction.”

He also spoke about the new additions that have entered the fold during pre-season and touched upon the qualities they’ll bring to the squad.

“They’ve been fantastic,” Callum said.

“They have settled in extremely quickly, which always helps when you’re trying to gel a squad of players together in time for a new season.

“Some of the players have come in from amateur football but their attitude and application have been faultless, and I think a lot of that comes down to players like myself who also came from the local amateur leagues being able to give advice and guidance.”

● This coming Saturday the Brian Boys Stadium will play host to a special ‘Dawn’s Day’ event to remember the life of local woman, Dawn Walker, who sadly died 12 months ago. Dawn’s brother, Gary, has organised a tribute day to mark the one-year anniversary with a charity football match between a Brent Peters’ XI and Dawn’s XI, managed by former Bacup Borough FC captain, Damian Moran.

The event will also have live entertainment, with music from female vocalist, Francesca, and the Irish Rover show by Ryan Ireland with all proceeds going to Mind UK, a charity close to Dawn’s heart.

The event starts at noon with the football match kicking off at 3pm.

Entry is by donation at the gate.
