‘Inconsiderate’ parkers blamed for the rise of ‘rodent’s paradise’

-

COUNCIL chiefs have blamed “inconsiderate parking” after bins on a street described as a “rodent’s paradise” went uncollected for four weeks.

Kate Kenny, of Heys Street, Haslingden, contacted the Free Press for help after the bin rounds was missed, in what she says is an ongoing issue. The bins were emptied shortly afterwards - on June 9 - following further timetable delays caused by the Jubilee.

She said: “I and other residents have contacted the council, but they are doing nothing to resolve.

“This has happened on numerous occasions - the excuse being they can’t enter the road. We have seen them drive past and not even attempt this.

“We have elders and people who don’t drive so the refuse is piling high it’s a rodent’s paradise!”

A Rossendale council spokesperson said: “We were unable to collect the refuse from Heys Street in Haslingden on May 27 2022 due to inconsiderate parking and were again unable to gain access when we returned on 1st June 2022.

“Crews are given routes and have tight schedules they must follow, and it might take several days before they are able to revisit. Unfortunately, with the Bank Holidays, the crew was not able to return until Thursday 9th June 2022. Access was available and they were able to empty the bins.

“Parking which obstructs our waggons and stops us from collecting bins, causes issues not just for ourselves having to reschedule and re-route crews but obviously also for emergency vehicles and we would kindly ask that people consider this when parking their vehicles.”

In February 2021 the same resident identified the street as a grot spot for fly-tippers and claimed the town was “seriously neglected” by cleansing teams. The council said it was a “reoccurring issue” and said they had drawn up an education and enforcement plan as part of a targeted clean-up of the area.
