Developers bid to convert old chapel into flats
DEVELOPERS are bidding to convert a chapel building which housed a care home until it closed last year, into flats.
Mr Adam Camps & Damon Gledhill have applied to Rossendale council for permission for the alterations to the former Deerplay Rest Home building at 10 Heald Lane, Weir into an apartment building comprising 16 dwellings.
The design and access statement says: “To the rear of the chapel is a former Sunday School with attached outbuildings. This is of similar stone construction and is in a poor state of repair compared to the former Chapel-Care Home.
“The property ceased to function as a Care Home in 2021 and the property was put up for sale.
“This application is seeking permission to convert the existing two-storey Care Home into eight separate two-bedroom, onebathroom apartments.
“These alterations are in the main - internal and the existing building would convert with relative ease.”
The applicants add that the existing “dilapidated outbuildings” are to be demolished and part of the former Sunday School is to be altered and reduced in size to accommodate additional vehicle parking. The proposal also includes the alteration to two stone arches.
The statement goes on: “The proposal is to provide much needed, high quality, high specification, thermally efficient accommodation within an existing residential area. The proposal in the main uses the existing building envelope with the majority of the alteration works taking place internally or at the rear of the property. Parking facilities for the residents are provided within the site boundary.
“The former Care Home provided living accommodation for up to 22 residents for approximately 30 years and has been part of the overall residential expansion in the Weir area. This proposal provides much needed living accommodation whilst retaining and repurposing a local landmark building.”
