Pleased to continue celebrating community success
AFTER all the excitement of our Jubilee celebrations, we have continued throughout June and into July, to attend some fantastic events.
On June 9 we attended the Rossendale Badminton League AGM to present three of their members with a certificate on behalf of Rossendale BC.
At our annual meeting in
May, the leader of the council announced that Steve Ramsbottom, George Bristow and Betty Bayes have committed over 40 years to running the Rossendale Badminton League and would be retiring this year. I was honoured to be able to attend their AGM to congratulate them on this achievement.
Friday, June 17 kicked off a busy weekend of engagements for myself and my Mayoress, starting with an invitation to the Pride of Rossendale Awards.
The awards ceremony was organised by Rossendale Hospice in order to recognise the hidden gems within our community. There were numerous awards given on the evening, including: Pride of the Valley Award, Woman of the Year, Man of the Year and Young Person of the Year, plus many more. After the difficult two years we have all endured, it was heart-warming to meet so many selfless people and let them know how much they are valued.
The same evening also saw the first of my charity fundraising events, held at the IDL Club in Haslingden.
This event was organised by Cllr Ann Kenyon on behalf of the Mayor’s Charity Fund and raised more than £400; I would like to take this opportunity to thank Cllr Kenyon and everybody else involved for their efforts and the money raised for my chosen charities.
The rest of the weekend was filled with community events.
We attended the opening of another new cake shop, this time on Bank Street in Rawtenstall. There were some amazing cakes on offer and the cupcakes we purchased were delicious; I wish Molly all the best with her new venture.
Following this we visited Lumb Community Fun Day and a Garden Open Day organised by Karen Clough, as well as the WI 70th Birthday Celebration on Sunday afternoon.
Rossendale Borough Council held their annual Armed Forces Flag Raising Ceremony on Monday, June 20, as part of
Armed Forces Week. This ceremony gives us the opportunity to raise public awareness of the contribution made to our country by those who serve and have served in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces and also, it gives the nation an opportunity to show our support for the men and women of the Armed Forces.
I was honoured to attend this event as mayor, alongside our Deputy Lieutenant, Louise Cooper BEM, and to raise our Armed Forces Flag, I also laid a wreath at the cenotaph to commemorate the anniversary of the Fal land War.
